Demographics
Population growth is, among others, an important part of the recent demographic change in Virginia.
Another aspect is the racial diversity with only about 64% whites in the suburbs outside of Washington, D.C, compared to 91% in 1990.
And with these shifts Virginia's cities are becoming more blue.
Voting History
Virginia shows a long history of voting for the Republicans, first time going blue again in 2008. The following election periods the sometimes slight majority of Virginia's citizens kept voting for the Democrats. With its senators and most U.S. House Represantatives being Democratic, it's likely the people will continue voting blue.
Election Laws
Lastly, the Election laws make it easy for the citizens to register for voting due to online registrations, and allow voting per mail without needing a reason. These might work as incentives for people to vote, as the amount of those not voting in the past election is considered to be part of the reason for the Democrat's loss 2016.

Final Words
Despite the actual outcome and correctness of the prediction made, getting involved in national politics and learning about its systems as well as potential consequences and possibilities is crucial.
The government is supposed to represent its citizens, which makes it important for everyone to speak up and be an influence to the whole.
This calls upon everyone to get informed and vote in the best interest of themselves and the community welfare.
