Virginia - A battleground state

From 1952 all the way to 2004 Virginia went with the Republicans, but in 2008 that changed. Barack Obama, the Democratic Candidate, won the state with 53% of the votes. Since then the Democrats have always been in the lead.
But what caused this shift? And how will it affect the 2020 election?
